Mowsley is a compact, pretty village consisting of about 90 dwellings and 220 inhabitants, with some very old as well as much newer-build properties. The countryside surrounding Mowsley affords some spectacularly beautiful scenery, since the village sits on the highest point on the edge of Laughton Hills. The nearby lanes therefore make it an ideal place to take quiet walks or rides. Although small, Mowsley nevertheless supports an active community life through its church, village hall, clubs, pub and livery stables and even has links with a Morris Dancing group. There is a Summer Festival and gardening club in the village
The Domesday Book refers to Mowsley as Muselai, deriving from the Old English 'Mus lai', meaning mouse infested clearance. This is therefore the link to the mice which are heralded on the village signs. By the early 14th century the name was being spelled 'Mouselee' and, although the spelling has changed several times since, the pronunciation continues to be 'Mouselea'.
Mowsley is set near the southern tip of Leicestershire mid-way between the small towns of Market Harborough with its main line railway station and Lutterworth. Everyday needs can be catered for in Kibworth (under 5 miles distance) which offers a surprisingly full range of amenities and facilities.
The village also supports the Heritage Society, Laughton and Mowsley Cricket Club and a Gardening Club.
A mobile library makes a weekly visit, stopping near the village hall.
